The same effect can be achieved in XP, but by running SG TCP Optimizer it is possible to automatically determine the optimal settings for such dark network magic as the MaxMTU and RWIN values plus other TCP/IP Registry parameters.

This freeware, standalone application interrogates your connection and the Registry and suggests changes and tweaks for improved speed and stability.

Of course, it is vital you back up the Registry before letting it loose just in case, and a good idea to run a speed test before and after to measure real world performance gains.
