Under the new naming scheme, Core will represent the general title for its flagship processor brand, with each new product under that brand receiving a specific identifier, which in the case of the first Nehalem architecture is i7.
Quite how this will be received by customers remains to be seen, especially after Intel named the second generation Centrino platform "Centrino 2", specifically to make it easier for customers to understand it was superior to the first iteration.
Intel also revealed that Extreme Editions of the i7 will arrive alongside the standard models, and will feature a black label rather than blue.
The processors, which sport four cores on a single piece of silicon, will go into production in the fourth quarter of this year.
