With new orders for built-in Bluetooth solutions coming from the world's largest handset vendor Nokia, CSR managed to expand its share in the global market for the handset-use Bluetooth chips to 51 per cent in the fourth quarter of last year, up from the 29 per cent it recorded in the same quarter of 2003, the sources said.
However, CSR is now facing strong competition from Broadcom, another leading provider of wireless technology, which has now expanded its market share to about 20 per cent of the global handset segment, the source indicated.
Broadcom has enhanced its competitiveness following its acquisition of Widcomm in April last year and its recent acquisition of Zeevo, a leading provider of system-on-chip and software solutions for Bluetooth, the sources stated.
Many Taiwan-based makers of Bluetooth-enabled devices, including Universal Scientific Industrial (USI), J-Three International Holding, Formosa Teletek Corporation and CC&C Technologies, are now using Bluetooth solutions offered by Broadcom, the sources noted.
