Toshiba introduces featherlight R600 laptop 8:56AM, Friday 10th October 2008
Toshiba has unveiled the latest model in its ultraportable Portege range, the R600.

The R600 takes its design cues from the rest of the Portege line, but reducing the weight to just 1.1kg while measuring 283 x 215.8 x 19.5-25.5mm, the same dimensions as the R500, launched in July.

Despite the svelte dimensions, the laptop remains fully featured, boasting a dual-layer DVD burner, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, 0.3-megapixel webcam and fingerprint reader.

The R600 maintains the 12.1in, 1280 x 800 screen of its predecessor, though users will have a choice of two new specifications: a 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 1GB of RAM and a 128GB solid-state drive, or a cheaper 1.2GHz Core 2 Duo with with 2GB RAM and a 160GB SATA hard disk.

Toshiba is also claiming a hefty nine hours of battery life for the R600, which could be a strong selling point should it pan out.

The R600 has only appeared on Toshiba's Canadian website thus far, with prices beginning at £1,222.
