Atom shortages hit Eee PC supply
11:06AM, Friday 22nd August 2008
Asus has been forced to ship newer models of its Eee PC with Celeron processors, claiming Atom shortages have not abated.
"There's a serious shortage of Atom microprocessors," an Asus executive tells PC World. "We're focusing our Atom supply on the Eee PC 901, 1000 and 1000H models."
In turn, the less expensive 904HD and 1000HD models will feature the Celeron processors.
Intel has previously attributed the Atom shortage to a strong demand which has seen the processors appearing in desktops, as well as the low-power laptops they were originally designed for.
Intel has also been hit with supply chain problems, not least of which the recent earthquake in China which has disrupted production.
Intel claims the shortages will be alleviated by the end of the third quarter.
