iTunes update turns iPhone into remote control 10:09AM, Thursday 10th July 2008
Apple has released a new update of its iTunes software for the iPhone 3G - and a new app that turns the phone into a remote control.

Version 7.7 of the iTunes software is now available to download for both Mac and Windows, ahead of tomorrow's launch of the iPhone 3G.

However, it's a new app that's most likely to cause a stir amongst iPhone and iPod touch owners.

It allows you to control the iTunes software on your PC from any room in the house, by using your iPhone or iPod touch as a remote control. This could be

particularly handy for those who use their PC or Mac as their main music centre.

The new setting is found in the Advanced tab of the iTunes software.

You can download the new version of iTunes here. The new app will only be available on devices running version 2 of the iPhone software, which is free to iPhone owners but once again incurs a charge for iPod touch holders.

Getting hold of an iPhone 3G might not be so simple, however, following reports of widespread shortages.

A text message sent to a PC Pro staff member this morning from O2 apologised "if your experience on Monday wasn't great if you were trying to order iPhone 3G." The company's website once again struggled under the weight of demand.
