Apple has no plans to prevent deactivated first generation iPhones from being used both as iPods and to access the internet over Wi-Fi, according to US carrier AT&T.
"If the device is not re-activated as a wireless phone after you've upgraded to iPhone 3G, it will still work as an iTunes player and can access Wi-Fi," a spokesperson <

UK iPhone owners can upgrade to the new 3G model for free if they are on the £45 or £75 tariff; otherwise it costs £99. Old handsets can then be given to any friend or family member already on an eligible O2 tariff - they'll be able to transfer to one of O2's iPhone plans. If they're not already with O2 or on an eligible O2 tariff, they can get one of the new Pay & Go SIM cards.
Meanwhile Nokia has unveiled its latest smartphone and rival to the iPhone. iGizmo has a video preview of the N96, with 16GB of storage, a five megapixel camera and DVB-H support for Mobile TV.
