Bargain laptops

[PC Pro]

They say the credit crunch is already biting, but we've got some excellent news: in the land of the laptop, prices have plummeted, performance has caught up with desk-based counterparts, and you can now pick up a finely equipped machine for less than a cross-continent flight.

We've rounded up a ten-strong group of laptops, not one of which costs more than £499 (exc VAT and delivery). Every single model here - perhaps barring Vye's ultraportable tablet PC - is replete with the kind of specifications which will effortlessly power through everyday tasks such as email, word processing and even a spot of photo- or video-editing.

So whether you're thinking of buying for a student, or just want a second computer your kids can use as a tool to access the internet, you'll find a wide range of models to suit. In fact, the range of machines on show is incredible in its diversity.

Our ten entrants range from a 1.2kg ultraportable right up to a three-and-a-half-kilo desktop replacement, and with screens starting at a teeny 7in and working their way up to a whopping 17in, there's something for everyone.

There's even excellent news for people who enjoy indulging in a little gaming. You might have thought that a budget laptop ruled out modern third-person shooters, but three of the models on test boast dedicated graphics and make a decent fist of playing Crysis. Less demanding games will work even more smoothly.

So, whether you want a laptop for work or play, to sling in a bag or sit on a desk, you'll find the right laptop for you and your wallet over the next few pages. If you've been waiting for the right time to replace the desktop PC monstrosity squatting in the corner of the room, this is it.
